Plato's Republic: An Interactive Hypertext
Classical texts in the humanities can be particularly difficult to work with and understand. Though many of these texts are now part of the public domain and thus readily accessible, these primarily plain text versions feature limited interactivity. For this project, I have created an easy-to-navigate hypertext version of Plato’s Republic which features the opportunity to divide the text by speaker and to examine key terms.
This final version aids in the ability to examine specific parts of a lengthy text in order to identify key themes for information and research purposes. It has an appealing and interactive layout which gives the ability to analyze specific parts of the text.
This project is relevant to textual analysis and to the study of digital humanities because it provides the ability to view Plato’s Republic through interactive performance. It gives the user the ability to view the text as both in terms of its content and how the content is put together. Ultimately, I have chosen to focus on text analysis features as I feel they are most relevant to the study of humanities texts.
The text used for this project is the Benjamin Jowett translation.
